Christos Demosthenous continues to lead the Cypriot Crews in 7th overall
Everyone was expecting the great battle between Saudi driver Yazeed Al Rajhi and Pole Kajetan Kajetanowicz to carry on from Leg 1. Rajhi had other plans however and blitzed through the morning loop winning two special stages in Asinou (SS11) and Xerarkaka (SS12). Ford Fiesta RRC driver was trailing by the end of Leg 1yet he returned to the Service Park today for a noon service with a healthy 35.6 seconds lead. Kajetanowicz stated that although he was pleased with his driving, the turbo of his Ford Fiesta R5 had reached temperatures higher than 500 degrees Celsius which cost him some time.
The first stage of the second day (SS10 Tseri) was won by Khalid Al Qassimi with Al Rajhi hot on his heels a mere 5 seconds behind. Qassimi is still unable to close in on third-place Abdul Aziz Al Kuwari with the two drivers being separated by 36 seconds, very similar to the battle for first place. Portuguese crew Bruno and Carlos Maghalaes with their Peugeot 208 T16 holds on to fifth place overall and have plenty of breathing space with sixth-placed Craig Breen being 1 minute and 13 seconds difference. The Irishman’s bad luck continued today, reached a literal boiling point in Xerarkaka where Peugeot engine descended even more in pace, going from “road mode” to “safe mode” due to high temperatures.
Christos Demosthenous and his co-driver Pambos Laos continue leading the Cypriot crews while holding firmly onto seventh place overall. Petros Panteli and George Alexandrou are eighth albeit with high engine temperature issues. The third local crew to hold onto a top-ten spot are Stavros Antoniou and “Chips Junior”. The morning loop ended on a high note for the Cypriot drivers with a fourth crew rounding up the top ten as Michael Posidias and Phanos Christophi managed to get good times in the first three Sunday stages and hold onto a 36 second lead over Vitaliy Puskhar.
